Harlow Town’s poor bank holiday continued on Monday when they went down to the odd goal in three at Boreham Wood’s Meadow Park.

Following Saturday’s home defeat against Folkestone, the Hawks were still in search of their first win of the new season, and in truth, rarely looked like getting it.

The game started poorly, with both sides losing possession too easily. A long range shot from Kenny Davis in the 7th minute was collected by Noel Imber in the home goal and apart from that he was rarely called into action in the opening 45 minutes.

As the game went on, the hosts took control of proceedings, with former Hawks favourite Marvin Samuel in the centre of most things that Boreham Wood were creating. In the 15th minutes Samuel had a shot blocked and minutes later a challenge on him resulted in a free kick being awarded on the edge of the Hawks area. Ryan Lockett saw his effort held by the diving Joyce.

Midway through the half Joe Reynolds twice shot high and wide from the edge of the area but it wasn’t too long before the home side took the lead. In the 32nd minute a fine run by Ryan Lockett was halted by a challenge from Beckett Hollenbach, unfortunately for the Hawks defender the ball ran loose to Simon Thomas who stabbed the ball home from close range.

Harlow’s best spell of the half came in the last five minutes, firstly Danny Hill was released by the telling pass from Davis, however, the midfielder delayed his shot and when he did get his shot away it was charged down by Michael Cox. Two minutes later Fowler fed Bunn who finished well, only to be denied by a lineman’s flag.

Half time 1-0

The second half saw the introduction of Dean Williams who replaced Bunn to add a bit more pace to the Harlow front line. In the 48th minute a Williams cross found Lee Miles, who returned the ball across the face of the six yard box where Kenny Davis just failed to apply the finishing touch.

On 52 minutes Boreham Wood thought they had increased their lead when Chris Bangura headed home at the far post, but once again the goal was disallowed for an infringement.

Jordan Fowler connected with a Tom McGowen free kick but couldn’t keep his hooked volley down enough to trouble Imber.

In the 66th minute Harlow made their second substitution when Kevin Warren replaced McGowen, however, four minutes later Harlow were facing an uphill task when Simon Thomas was upended in the area by Hawks ‘keeper Joyce and the same player got up to send his penalty into the top corner..

In the 73rd minute Tobi Oshitola replaced Danny Hill and five minutes later the latest substitute saw his header go over the bar, after a fine delivery from Clark Akers.

On 81 minutes Thomas should have completed his hat-trick when the striker headed wide of the post after eluding his marker and on 86 minutes Bangura turned swiftly in the box, only to see his powerful shot go just wide.

With time running out Dean Williams looked to have been upended by Cox just as he burst into the area, however, referee Lee Collins waved away any penalty appeals. With the match now into injury time the Williams Oshitola combination finally paid off as, the pair combined, before Oshitola saw his shot parried by Imber where Williams was quick to follow up and score a late consolation goal.

There was two bookings for each side. Bangura and Samuel for the hosts, whilst Lee Miles and Clark Akers also found their way into the referees notebook.
